Goal setting is powerful because it provides focus. It shapes our dreams. It gives us the ability to hone in on the exact actions we need to perform to achieve everything we desire in life. Goals are great because they cause us to stretch and grow in ways that we never have before.

There are a number of acronym’s out there which outline goal setting and the process along the way. It probably won’t come as a surprise to mention the SMART principle at this point and what it stands for. It was designed to set us up in the right way, using the acronym Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time Bound, which, if you have never used before to help you achieve a goal, is a very useful tool. I’m not going to go into too much detail about the SMART principle in this blog I am going to pay particular attention to another principle you may not have heard of. The book Re-Thinking Positive Thinking delves a little deeper into setting goals, using an acronym called WHOOP. Before we break down the acronym WHOOP it’s important to highlight at this point, the importance of execution.

We can talk all day about goal setting and the journey we are going to embark on along the way to achieve the end goal. We can write a detailed plan, give ourselves a time frame, have check points along the way to ensure it’s achievable, but we don’t have anything if we don’t execute the plan. Although this is not included in the acronym WHOOP, we believe that this is vital and the contributing factor to WHOOP and success. Which changes the acronym to WHOOPIE, more on the execution a little later……..

W and H actually go together, WISHING and HOPING– The goal needs to provide you with a stimulus so you want to do it. You can’t just wish and hope you must have a plan, what are you going to do every single day to make this achievable? However, people don’t get excited about the daily grind/ plan, people don’t get excited about what every day looks like, people get excited about the grand vision, the goal and in some cases the dream.  That is known as the wish and hope.

OUTCOME– has two separate pieces to it, the first piece is where we use the SMART acronym to help us put pen to paper to achieve the goal and what this looks like. The second part of the outcome – what is it going to feel like when I complete this goal, how am I going to feel inside?

What type of person are you?

Attach the emotion to the goal – I want this more than anything, you begin to develop a deeper meaning for the goal because when it gets tough and the chips are down, it’s the emotion attached to the goal, which will keep you on task, this is what will get you out of bed everyday. If you can’t attach emotion to the goal and cant get extremely excited about it, wake up every day and want to crush it, maybe it’s not the right goal for you.

OBSTACLES – we need to have a practical approach to achieving our goal, but more importantly, keep an open mind and pinpoint what is holding you back and what obstacles are going to pop up along the way. It’s important to identify them so when they intercept you are fully prepared and ready to tackle them. Every obstacle can be overcome.

PLAN – What are you going to do along the way, what does the daily grind look like? Start delving more into the detail. Most people never get to this point in the process. A lot of people just WISH and HOPE and stop there, this is not their fault. Here is what happens, the human brain is wired to give you credit and a hormonal release for just thinking those thoughts because we can’t separate the subconscious from the conscious, humans actually get a feel good factor from just thinking these thoughts. WE NEED to get past this, let’s create a SMART Goal, let’s tie a feeling to it, understand what is going to get in the way, develop a plan to what every day looks like and set out to crush it. Be very clear what type of person you are when these obstacles present themselves, I am the type of person that…if I know I have a really busy day at work, I will get up at 5:30 to get in the work on my goal, when its snowing outside I’m the type of person that…will put on their shoes and still go for that run, when I finish work at 22:00 and I’m extremely tired and all I want to do is go to bed, I’m the type of person that…still opens up their laptop and continues to work on their goal.
You are what you repeatedly do and if you aren’t where you want to be in life it’s because of something you are either doing or not doing. We are now attaching identity to the goal.

IDENTITY – When you start to attach your identity to the obstacles, it’s already taking care of, you have already told yourself what you are going to do when they come up, you have told yourself what type of person you are, you’re a doer. When it is snowing outside or when you do have to work late, you have already identified these obstacles and you’re the type of person that over comes the obstacles that stop other people from achieving their goals, this is the difference. It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy when it does happen and you overcome the obstacle. It is about the daily discipline, rinse, wash, repeat – you are the sum of your habits. So what we are saying…is that we can stick to the plan, regardless of what gets in the way. The final step…..after using the WHOOP acronym to form our plan…….we now must execute the plan.

EXECUTE – We must pursue them with massive action, with intent; we can talk about goals all we want and the feel good factor will be there, because the human brain gives us credit for just thinking about them. If you take nothing away from this blog and the WHOOP acronym doesn’t work for you, remember that if you take massive action to achieve a goal, get up every day and continue to take action you are going to move the needle in the right direction. Action is the only thing that adds everything else up! Don’t work 8 hours a day for a company, then go home and not work on your own goals, you’re not tired you’re uninspired!
